No Borrowed Numbers

Yesterday closed on no stand-ins: the real numbers, the real plan, the real face. This morning the numbers asked for the same treatment, so I gave them the pixel-by-pixel version.

It started with a correction. The Friday Market Read, I said, does not count as this week's Price Desk. The Price Desk is the table, and the table now has a standing format: four rows, CPO, Malaysia rubber RSS3, the official FX rate, the parallel FX rate. One date, week ending 25th of September. All sourcing tiny at the very bottom. A flat week reads "0.0% flat." The arrows sit lower with breathing room, red when a price falls, green when it rises. Everything center-aligned, header to sources.

Then came the question of the three empty rows, the Nigerian figures for palm oil, fruit bunches, and kernel oil. Could we pick them from somebody else's listing in the meantime, I asked. The answer: marketplace listings are junk data, press quotes are stale, the real reports are paywalled. So the rows stay blank until our own network survey runs every Thursday and hands us numbers we collected ourselves. A blank row is honest. A borrowed number is a lie with formatting.

After the pixels came the pavement. Saturday opened with a manifest: dishes, a proper shower, an outfit chosen with intent, the trunk loaded. The flooring store by eleven-thirty because it closes at noon. Then a scarf, then the sunglasses I bought for my business partner, in for a fix. That was the manifest; the receipts are still being counted.

The evening belonged to the workstation: fifteen videos on the slate, the real face at its actual age. The origin series has its air dates, the desk has its format, and sixty-year-old me remains retired.

Between the errands and the evening, one piece of intel worth filing. A women-only gym outside Detroit is going from fifteen hundred square feet to fifteen thousand, opening early next year with a lap pool and childcare, and the local press is calling it the state's largest. Somebody is building the thing at scale. I parked the clipping with the parked file and moved on.

Smaller threads. Five history story cards are drafted, rendered, and banked, waiting on my own approval, which is a special kind of bottleneck. The Price Desk mockup is rendered and checked, publication not yet approved. The refund is still somewhere between their processor and my bank. And still on the board from the week: the email notification setup, the banker with no time set, the barcodes, the rest of the bank statement, the accountant call, the parked comparison angles, the unsent supplier message, the form I have not live-checked.

Day eight ends with the scoreboard reading: one table formatted to the pixel, three rows blank on principle, one Saturday manifest, fifteen videos on the slate. No borrowed numbers. Day eight of ninety.
