Once a month

The Monthly Mission.

Once a month I'll ask you to do one small thing that's slightly unlike you — not a checklist, one prompt. The point isn't improvement; it's remembering you're a person outside your work and your phone.

This month · October 2026

Leave your phone at home.

The mission: pick one ordinary outing this week, coffee, a walk, the grocery run, and leave your phone at home. Not on silent in your pocket. At home.

The horrible part is honest. The first ten minutes are twitchy. Your hand goes to the pocket that isn't holding anything, three, four times. You feel unreachable, which is another word for unimportant, which is exactly the feeling worth sitting inside.

The beautiful part comes right after. Then the noise stops. You notice the street you're on, the actual temperature, the fact that the barista has a laugh like a screen door. You've been here a hundred times and never actually been here.

What it does for you. Nobody needs you for forty-five minutes, and the world keeps turning. That's the whole lesson: you are allowed to be temporarily unfindable. Your attention is yours again, at least for the length of a coffee.

You'll want to bring it "just in case." Don't. Once. Then tell me what your mind did.

A note, because it matters: this is an invitation, never a dare. If you're on call for work or family, or headed somewhere you genuinely need it, pick a different outing. It never counts against the month.
